Hello all, I have a problem with my 2003 Explorer XLT. My wife has found a small pastic part of some sort lying in the front passenger floorboard area recently and ever since, there is a constant flow of outside air coming into the passenger side area, especially behind the dash in the glove compartment. I don't know if it is something to control the fresh air vent or what. Air always blows in, even when the heat/AC is on or off, as well as fan is on or off.The heat works fine in all areas as well as the A/C, but i get the air blowing always. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, the numbers on the plastic part are: 4246-A as well as 1L2H-18735-A.
there are three vacuum cylinders on the air duct that open and close to route air thru the truck. the first is the inlet from the fan (you vacuum cylinder cam is broken), the second is to route air to the floor or panel loouvers, the third is to route air to the defrost louvers, as you move the ****, the vacuum pulls thru hoses to the vacuum cylinders.... there is also a last door that is electrical controlled, the "mixing door" to blend hot and cold air to the desired temp. the blend door has a problem with bearing the cam off the motor. i have never heard of the inlet door (from the blower motor) failing the cam... apparently yours has. as you said it is "somewhere" up by the glove box. it should be open when heater or AC are on, and closed when not used.
i have not heard of one of these cam arms breaking. you can get parts for the blend door at NAPA or Auto Zone. I would guess the arms are the same. I have taken this dampaer drive apart, but i know it is between the blower fan motor and the heater core. i assume you can lay on the passenger floor and see the drive arm or vacuum cylinder by the glove box, or behind it. Since you see the plastic part on the floor, it would appear your in the right area. I dont know, but i assume the part you have is a couple inches long, and 3/4 inch wide, maybe 1/4 inch thick??? might have a hole in one end and would appear to be an arm that connects the cylinder to the damper shaft??????
here is a how to on the blend door. remember it is electric, you are looking for a vacuum cylinder close to this area--- might give you and idea. removing the glove box might open things up for inspection.
