How many 2005 6.0 Diesel owners have blowen there head gaskets? I was talking to Banks on the phone about there module and I was told that 2003 and 2004 had bad gaskets but 2004.5,2005 and 2006 are ok! If anyone has a 2004.5 and newer please let me know if you had head gasket problems.
Banks systems will blow your head gaskets no matter what year 6.0 you have. Stay away from banks tuners. nothing but problems. if you want to make real power go with SCT with custom tunes from Matt at Spartan Diesel Technology
I have a 2005 no head gasket problems, but the 03 and 04 trucks had no boost gauges and so it would be very easy for them to be overboosting and not even know it. This would contribute to the head gasket problem. I have had my truck overboost but I caught it because of the gauge.
My 05 PowerStroke currently has 40,000 miles and no head gasket problems unit. I plan to turn up the power and probably will put head studs in before it has a problem.
My truck is a late model 05 and I had ARP headstuds installed before running into real head gasket issues. The tech did say that there was a drop of coolant in my exhaust, so they may have been on their way out. But when my truck was in the shop, I did see two other 05-newer trucks getting new head gaskets and studs installed for coolant puking problem. Yes, they did supposedly improve on the head gasket design, but that still doesn't make up for the lackluster torque-to-yield head bolts holding them in.
Yeah, the guidelines generally say that they are to use Ford/Intl parts, not aftermarket parts. If aftermarket parts are used, then they are no longer under warranty, which is fine by me when it comes to studs because the OEM bolts are worthless. Plus they'd have to pull the motor apart again to see the studs in there and I'm willing to take the chance that it won't happen. But, if you find a great diesel tech, he'll install them for you and if you continue to come back for your warranty work, then he'll back them up because he also knows the OEM head bolts are worthless.
You just have to understand that any dealership or diesel tech that installs head studs is sticking their head on the line when it comes to dealing with Ford down the line and that's why most won't do it.
My 05 has 72k on it, and technically it hasn't had a head gasket problem. At 66k I lost my oil cooler. My service writer is also a very good friend of mine, he told me to drive the truck about 16 blocks to the dealership on a sunday. I did, and because of this the tech pulled the heads while doing everything else. The heads and block deck were smooth. I had them put the ARP studs in, and they put new gaskets on for me. Shortly thereafter I tuned the truck with Matt's tunes from Spartan. All I have so far is around 2k miles on the mild street economy tune, but no troubles.
My 05 had no engine related problems until 35k mi. then while towing my 26' toyhauler trailer I started having overheating problems on long grades. It turned out to be a cracked egr cooler and leaking headgaskets.
My dealer replaced the egr cooler, heads, and installed ARP studs (which I bought) and I have now gone another 5000 mi. with no problems.
