I have an 88 Ranger 2.9 V-6 with Overdrive automatic trans....
recently my trans mission has picked up a shifting quirk that has me scratching my head...
If i'm cruzing down the highway "cruise control on or off" if I start down even the slightest hill and sometimes on perfectly flat road, the transmission downshifts for no reason at all...as soon as I hit even the slightest uphill grade it shifts back into overdrive..the over drive holds firm and does not slip at at all going up the hill and as soon as I crest the top of the hill it shifts back into drive.
I thinking it has something to do with manifold vacuum or throttle position, but it has me stumped because it has never done this before and as I have not been doing any work under the hood that would effect these things...
HMMM, interesting. I think your trans uses the TV linkage right? I'm no auto expert, hopefully one will chime in and help you, but I'd start by double checking the vacum system, and also the function of your kickdown cable. If the transmission isn't slipping, or otherwise indicating failure, it has to be a control problem of some kind. I think the control system of the older A4LD's was vacum with a mechanical kickdown linkage, either a cable or rod, for WOT forced kickdown. There are some intelligent people here, I'm sure you'll get a more specific answer, but that's where I'd start.
