Overdrive down shift

Overdrive down shift
Here is a question for the gurus. When towing with my 02 F250 PSD auto trans before I start up a hill that I know will cause a down shift out of overdrive I turn the OD off and it shifts a little smoother than in the middle of the hill. While doing this I noticed that on the down hill side with OD off you have better engine breaking which would make sense. Now the question, is it acceptable to kick off OD while going down hill for engine breaking or is this hard on the tranny and something that shouldn't be done???
