hey everyone
bought my first diesel, 91 f350 dually pickup extra cab 5 speed manual. nice interior no tears or rips with nice original carpet for 800 bucks NO RUST and NO DENTS.
the motor is out of it because it has cavitation holes in cylinders
i bought a 7.3 for 150 bucks cause the guy is renting out his shop and has to get rid of a bunch of stuff. supposed to be good. he also has another 7.3 in an 87 f350 ramp truck.
he will sell me that motor for 350 bucks. i heard it run and it sounded good. it fired right up with no smoke.
the reason he is selling it is because it keeps cracking the bellhousing. he says it is because the motor is to big for that year truck, he is replcing it with a 6.9.
i know that cant be the reason but anybody know what would cause the bellhousing to crack?
i still intend to buy it just wondering
thanks and sorry for rattleing on
gt
dont know for sure. i assummed it was the original that comes behind the 6.9. didnt know there were different options for the 4 speed. my fault. he wont know so i will have to crawl under it and see for myself. but it will be awhile as i am in nevada right now and the truck is at home in georgia.
he said it was the bellhousing that cracks not an adapter, i will see what i can when i get under it
The five speeds have intergral bell housings on the transmission.
I have seen several of them cracked.
6.9 or 7.3 has nothing to do with it.
The aluminum housing on the ZF will not take much abuse before it cracks.
Abuse is like jerking on something with a chain, speed shifting, dropping the clutch and stuff like that.

On big motors we have to rig a dial indicator on the crank when installing the bellhousing adapter to make sure it is centered can't be over 4 thousanths out or it causes problems sometimes breaks the clutch if your lucky crank if your not.
just something to check if you have the motor out anyway.
