I live here in minnesota. i should change my ATF fluid. its so cold im gonna have a mechanic do it. what is the ballpark fiqure i should expect to pay?
$100-$200. Not knowing what tranny you have and either you need Mercon or MerconV it could range anywhere in there. $100 is probably even low since I assume ATF prices have gone up recently, might be more like $150 base and $250 max.
How many miles are on the fluid you have in there now, how long has been since you or that you know of has it been changed. You can change the fluid but not the filter if it's never had a change, if you change the filter you could end up with a burned tranny. Make sure you question you tranny tech about and make sure you can trust him.

What? I'd love to know how a new filter will burn up a transmission.
more bad information... at a minimum, pull the pan, drain the 5 quarts of Mercon, change the filter, wipe the residue off the vavle body and the bottom of the pan, clean the magnet, then reinstall the pan and top off the oil. if your truck is 2001 or prior, you probably have a plug in the bottom of the converter to drain another 8 quarts. a full drain is o.k., but watch for the "power flush" that can break up sediment in the crevices and get into the valve body or solenoids and cause problems.
