I"m thinking about puting a toploader behind a 390 in a 69 F100 ... I'd like to see some pics of shifter locations and shifter options .... I want to keep the bench seat and I'm wondering if there is a long handle truck style shifter that will work.... thanks
I've done this to three of my trucks. Which toploader are you using? the long tailhousing or short. The long tailhousing version is 27+" OAL(whole case), the short is 24" OAL. I've always used the short version which keeps the shifter farther forward in the truck. The short tailhousing version has TWO mounting locations and with a bench seat, the mount in the middle of the tailhousing would keep it farther forward and out of the benchseat area. I always put bucket seats in mine so it doesn't matter the position. If you look in my gallerys under '67 F100 I think there is pictures from underneath and inside showing my installation in that truck.
I usually get the Hurst "INDY" 4 spd shifter with installation kit. It gives you alot of various mounting parts and makes it pretty easy to put in a truck. If you have skills, making a new mounting plate is easy and gives you even more options. You can also buy alot of different versions of handles for Hurst shifters. I even made my own this last time just for something different.
Good luck with the project.
