Hey everybody, love this FE web!!. I am excited now!. I have a fresh 390 RV cam, dual exhaust. So i just received my new edelbrock rpm intake, a street avenger 670 cfm carb, and some hooker headers. All new!! WOW i can't weight to get it on to see how much difference it will make. I am looking at a new air cleaner ***. from k&n, it's the one that has a filter for a top and sides, can't remember what it is called, but its about $150.00 for the whole assembly. What do you experienced FE builders think about this kind of set up verses the standard air filter assembly??. I mean as far as more h.p. or whatever?. Ah the 390 is in a f250 pickup if that matters. Thank you for you inputs.
Unless you plan on running at WOT and in excess of 6500, I doubt the $150 air cleaner will make a bit more power then the $29.95 standard aftermarket chrome one. Probably some increase in power, but I'm sure you'd have to have it on a dyno to see it.....
Well I disagree with dave......more cam, Intake, Headers, Open filter..More air in more air out..More HP out..That simple.....Engines are nothing more than an air pump! The more the breath the better off they are!!!
Skip the K&N filter top. It'll add nothing. Just use a K&N filter in the air cleaner of your choice.
Yep! I don't see a need for the top as well. But it is your money/project and if it makes you feel good, then do it LOL. I don't think you will gain anything from using that top! JMHO
hi all i still use my old oil bath air filter , i rebuild my 360 had a paper filter on it but it keep clogging with mud spray so i went to the back of the shed and look for the old oil bath filter and thats where it stayed works great
Pbear......Just buy a ram air box for it.....and run some duct work and get fresh cooler air into the carb...and then buy the K&N round air filter for it.. That way if you plan on a bigger build at a later date? you have your fresh air system allready taken care of... It all depends on where you want to end up....
I did run a few vehicles with the open top cleaner....But I also had a scoop on the hood....and they worked great.... But with that said not as good with the fresh air ram box.... JMO.. its your money...and sometimes I GO over kill...but It allways ends up being one less piece to buy....LOL...

They make a ram air box for it???? I have a K&N filter and top for mine now, but I am always looking for something else to make an extra HP or 2..lol Enough is never enough right!?!?!
I wouldn't wast my money on a top. The only time that I would, is for hood clearance. When you have to run smaller filter (like 3" tall or less) or a shaker set-up, other wise no gain from it. Sorry Russ, don't take it to hart. Put your money where you are going to make some gains. I think Car Crafter did an article on air filters (on tall and short filters) and you would be surprised on what you don't need to make power. But each to there own & Its your money to do with what you want.......JMHO
BTW guys Russ has a really cool design for a airbox. I don't think it has the RJS patent yet but it's a good concept idea.
I really like KN filters and have used them often. I've never tried the top filter tho. And that stubstack looks wicked cool!! That's another must have for me x 2.
OK here is what I don't understand... What are they talking about here..>>> "This stubstack is designed to be used with Holley 390-850cfm square bore carbs (4150/4160), that have had the choke horn milled off and still use an air cleaner. Eliminates the need for hand polishing and radius work. Will work with all K&N Custom Chrome Racing Air Cleaners, including Tall Velocity Stack Air Cleaners."
