Got a question bout V10s, My brother has a 2005 F350 V10,automatic OD,4.30 gears,4 WD. He pulls a 25 ft. gooseneck implement trailer with loads varying from 3500-12500 lbs. His complaint is that it is a dog no matter what the load. What can be done to get him more power ?
The 12500 LB load is a pretty good load for a V10, especially if you're in the hill country. It's not too much, but your tranny will hunt for gears a good bit.
Does he happen to have larger than OEM tires? If so, that may be the reason. Other than that, it oughta carry the weight pretty good.
Mine's an '06 F-350 with 4.30 rear also. Only diff is mine is a 4x2. I tow a 5'er weighing in at 11k and go up steep grades with the greatest of ease. Sounds like a thorough engine diagnostic is in order.
Good luck!
Tim
What's a "dog" to some isn't to others. Performance "feelings" rather than hard facts are a difficult thing to discuss and therefore near impossible to help "fix".
It's been said that "nothing is good or bad but by comparison". Maybe a comparison is in order for him to gain perspective.
If it is known that everything is in proper working order and the maintenance items are done and up to date (filters, fluids etc.) then maybe he can do some basic performance tests and post up the results. Say, like a 0-60 time, 1/8 mile etc. etc. Fellas here with the same model can then post up their results for comparison. Just an idea.

I agree, what feels like a dog to one person is different to another. Going from a F150 to a super duty, I noticed that the power feeling was very different. The super duty is a big truck with a lot of mass. It is going to feel different.
But towing is where the 3V V-10 shines. I think it is a great tow platform. The best I have ever had in my 40 years of driving.

"His complaint is that it is a dog no matter what the load". Punch it in low with no load. If it doesn't squeel its a$$ off then the motor isn't "properly tuned" !
We have an 8K trailer when we have pulled over the mountains in Colorado with no problem - 55 MPH at Eisenhower (sp??) tunnel. Is it possible that your brother is not accostomed to the engine reving up so he backs off?? It can really rev at times. I was a little surprized when I first had mine.

It's not going to squeel it's *** off, because there is traction control on the new 3V's with fly by wire throttle. It's built in to the programming, and not something that can be turned on and off by a switch on the dash like some of us may be used to seeing.
I know this because, I've done some custom tuning on my '06, and with the custom tune installed it will spin the tires with ease, and on the factory tune it will not, although both tunes made exactly the same rwhp on the dyno.

Is he by chance accustomed to driving or towing with diesels? I know first hand coming from my diesels back to the V10 it does fell like a dog (BAD) when towing. But is really is not that bad you just have to realize that the V10 has to scream (RPM) to tow well, which coming from the diesel is the strangest feeling. Towing with a gas motor is an art compared to towing with a diesel. Also the gas motors will never tow as easy or as good as the diesel, BUT the V10 does tow VERY VERY WELL, just diffract.

Yeah I have to call B.S. on that one. Something else is going on there.
Martint, has this truck always been that way, or did the performance just fall off?
Im having the same problem. I pull a tractor and 16' trailer weighing in at 6500lbs. My 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 1/2 ton pulls and feels better than the 2002 F250 V10 My wife just bought. It has 4.30 gears and seems to run fine but my GMC does better. The F250 brakes better and doesnt sag in the rear like my half ton does.
I am very dissapointed in buying this Super Duty, Is it just me or do I just have to get used to it?
