63 Styleside Bumper Options?

Hey Folks,

Were there different packages or options offered to buyers of these trucks when they first sold? If so can someone list what these options would be? I'm wondering if things such as spotlights, mudflaps, bumpers, or towing packages were offered and if in different varieties.

Curious to see what the Ford gurus are going to reply with and\or list as options.

Merry Christmas folks!

Packages? It was 1963, not 2003.

No Camper Special packages were available, no tow packages, no hitches...heck, not even the wire plug was available back then. No mud flaps either. Yes on optional spotlights, right and left. No on carpeting, or accessory floor mats.

One manual controlled-no push button AM radio only was optional, no AM/FM's, no cassettes, no 8 track players, no floor mounted 45 RPM record players either (these were available on some of the cars). CD's, MP3 players weren't invented yet. No Bluetooth, cuz no cell phones. Two different heaters were optional, no air conditioning offered.

No power windows and seat, no power steering-just armstrong steering, no power brakes, no disc brakes. Turn signals were optional!! Custom Cabs offered a foam rubber front seat cushion, bright grille, windshield mouldings, cigarette lighter, other trinkets.

One speed wipers were standard, two speeds were optional as was a windshield washer. 3 on the tree came standard, overdrive was optional as was a four speed. Cruiseomatic was an option. Only two engines were optional, the 262 I-6 and the 292 V8.

The spare tire and the wheel (!!) were optional, as were two rear bumpers..one chrome, one painted. A chrome front bumper was optional, painted came standard. Exterior side mouldings were available as were bright metal dog dish hubcaps. No wheel covers were offered.

Other options: Several versions of outside mirrors (none were standard equipment), lap seat belts only, right side sunvisor, right side door armrest, padded dash, day/night mirror, amp & oil pressure gauges, heavy duty battery, matching keyed alike door lock cylinders (I kid you not!).

Back then ppl bought trucks for work...it wasn't till 1991 that more ppl bought pickups for pleasure rather than for anything else.

WOOHOO, my 63 has some options. It is a CustomCab with painted bumpers. I have the AM radio (still works), right side sun visor, turn signals, 292V8, and painted read bumper.

It now also has the optional 351W/C6 combo

Perfect replies folks. One from Numbers with stats accompanied by humor showing that this poster is human. Another from an obvious True Ford Enthusiast sharing what options were purchased with his vehicle.

I'd like to take pictures of my side view mirror (only one: driverside) and rear bumper then post them to see if they are original stock for my Truck. I'm guessing the side view mirror is but that my bumper isn't.

Numbers: Sir, could you confirm for me if they offered different styles of bumpers or was it just one style with the option, as you've educated, of chrome or painted?

If there are any other '63 owners out there I invite you to reply to this thread with what "options" came with your truck when you purchased it be it right off a prestigous Ford sales lot in '63 or from a second or more owner.

Thanks again folks.

That pesky database glitch... I'll try again...

The rear bumpers Ford offered were the same style, one was chrome, one was painted white. No step bumpers were offered by Ford till 1973, but several aftermarket companies (Fey on the West Coast) offered several different types for all the Ford pickups. The bumpers were painted silver, chrome was available upon request.

If the mirror is mounted into the slot in the door, it's prolly Gen-U-Ine Ford. If it's mounted on the door, it could be the Western type of mirror...these have two gooseneck arms, the other arm is mounted on the top of the door above the vent window. If a passenger car type mirror is mounted on the door that isn't factory...but if the mirror is something Ford offered (on the cars till 1967), it might have been dealer installed.

No left side outside mirrors were standard equipment (except on 1964/66 T-Birds & Lincolns) till 1/1/1966, and then only on the cars. The trucks received one standard left outside mirror in September 1966 for the 1967 model year.

In fact, Ford never installed mirror one at the factory. The mirrors came in a box inside the cab, it was up to the dealer to install them.

Why? For several reasons. The Western swing lock type of trailer towing mirrors stuck out, and may have been damaged when the trucks were shipped. The standard manual controlled (by hand) el cheapo outside mirror offered in 1967 was the same as the ones Ford Galaxies used. Ppl may have wanted something else, so if Ford had installed that mirror, then there would be holes to fill in the door, and the door would have to be repainted.

btw: there were several different types of optional trailer towing type mirrors, besides the one mentioned above. There was another with a 3rd arm, known as a "steady-rest." This other mirror had adjustable arms so the mirror could be adjusted outwards.
