remote entry/alarm

My wife's Caddy is spoiling me. Has anyone looked into 3rd party remote locking with possibly an alarm system? Is it possible to set one up that will do doors, door/hatch and hatch only options? Call me lazy but sometimes it just comes in handy.

I think the locks on all cars with power locks are on the same circuit, so they all lock and unlock together. The possible exception may be police cars.

You may be thinking about door releases, where a separate control can open a rear hatch or trunk. I've seen aftermarket alarm systems with those. You will have to install a solenoid in the rear hatch door for that feature. I don't recall any systems that also open the doors, but I guess that's a possibility.

It would not be that dificcult at all to install an aftermarket alarm/remote door lock. you just need to splice it into one of the controls for the auto door locks. Or you can hunt the junkyard for a ford controled one and get the keypad too. Just remember to look in the trunck of the donnor vehicle for the code for the keypad.

As for an automatic opening/closing rear hatch, I saw a couple electric versions the other day on e-bay, but I can't find them now.

I have a viper 160XV remote start installed on my 95 aero 3.0 with keyless entry. Works great.

One of the guys on the Fordnatics mailing list just related the story of an incident with a remote starting system. They had to replaced the battery on a truck that had one of those installed. As soon as they hooked up the new battery, the engine automatically started. Their hands were inches away from the fan, but they got lucky and no one was hurt.

Most of these systems come with an interlock switch for the hood; some installers are lazy and leave it out.

I installed a system on my '91 that I bought on eBay for next to nothing. It's not an alarm, but a keyless entry system that has an ignition disable feature. I just hooked up the "regular" outputs from the control system. The box is located right behind the instrument panel and all the wiring hookups were made behind the left kickpanel and from the harness coming from the ignition. The system locks/unlocks all doors when the button on the remote is depressed. The doors lock automatically (programmable option) and unlock when the car is started, or the ignition is turned off. There is one additional button on the remote which is intended for a trunk release, but the documentation states that it can be used for any other device. It also has a "valet button"; I've only used that for programming the system.
