I have a 1984 F150 with a 300 six auto. Starter teeth sound like they don't mesh correctly (noisy when cranking). What are the correct number of teeth on the starter and flywheel? Actually binds when hot to the point of not turning over. Starter was replaced along with battery, solenoid and cables. Timing checks OK. Not running hot.
What brand of starter are you using ? My experience has been that finding an aftermarket starter that lasts , functions as it should is pretty much a waste of time & money . I dont think it requires any shims ? Did the original have any shims ?
Are you running headers on your truck? I had to install a heat sheild on the starter after the headers were installed. Seems the heat from the headers was too much for the starter. Just my situation. Mike.

No headers, but did put a shield on exhaust pipe just in case. Did it today, so I disabled ignition to check for a difference. Still bound up. If it gets past the first crank, it will crank and start
