Did a little research and found someone who posted this as a procedure for checking your 4wd control module behind the passenger kick panel:
Remove the five-wire connector and the eight-wire connector from the bottom of the electronic control module.
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
Activate the self-test switch located on the module and note the result:
A flashing indicator lamp (approximately one flash per second) indicates that the control module is functioning properly.
A steady indicator lamp indicates that the control module is inoperative and must be replaced.
The Control Module is located behind the instrument panel on the right hand side, behind the wiring harnesses."
ok, pulled the five & eight wire plugs. key on run position. press self test button, light flashed four times & went out. plug back in both five & eight wire setup. press white button. light comes on for 30 seconds or so and goes out. press 4x4 button on dash, no click, no nothing.
To check if the transfer case motor is actually functioning (because it may be hard to hear it in a noisy shop) attach a voltmeter to A4 and A5. Have someone activate a shift and look for a brief (one second) increase in voltage and listen for the relay to click on, then off..."
Ok guys, finally had time(and weather!) to work on it... ended up getting a Dorman shift motor for just about $100 and installed it this weekend. system does work as normal now. I did check the dash switch & module in the kick panel first of course.
The motor is easy to install, I guess the hardest part was the speed sensor pins, but if you take your time & really look at them it is not a big deal.
