i have a 85 6.9, last year i put 8 new injectors in the truck and they probley have a total of 100 miles on them since the change. i notice after you start it up and let it run it has a constant trail of smoke that comes out of the exhaust at idle. could it just be possible that its just the pump thats too far advanced. and exactly how much noise should it make on a cold start up? mine makes a lot of noice at first, and then starts going away after about 5 seconds or so and gets less and less as it warms up. one other reason im asking about the timing is the truck just doesnt have the pulling power like it should. any ideas would be helpfull.
What code was on the injectors, did you ever have the timing checked/adjusted, where is the scribe line on the injector in relation to the scribe line on the gear cover housing- both at the 12 o'clock position? Most of the rattle at with the cold advance on should only be noticable when you start out to drive, at 2000 rpm or so, once the cold advance cuts off, there should be no noticable rattle when you step on the go pedal.
the injectors are bb code, never had a chance to put it on a timing meter nor could tell you who would even have one for that much. i can tell you that i set the scribe line about 1/16th of an inch on the advanced side of the scribe line on the pump housing.

Mine was like that until I replaced the IP yesterday, now its gone. I kept doubting that was the problem even though everyone on here says it. I wish I would have listened before.
Also with the new ip, it did it when I had it retarded too far.
thanks 72f250 for the reply, yes im kind of steering away from the injector pump because of the cost reasons. but i know ill have to change it sooner or latter.
