I have a 1986 F150 with a 4.9 inline 6 with a 3 speed automatic transmission. The truck only has 160k on it.
Anyway the other day I took it out for my Sunday drive to the Home Depot (the temperature was about 30 degrees) and the truck would not shift out of first gear!! I stopped, manually put it into 1 then shifted it to the second gear, everything was fine, went to third and nothing happened...it stayed in 2nd!!! The strange thing is that when its in D it will not go past first gear, but will go to second when I change manually.
The first thing I did was check the fluid, it was fine, then I thought that it might be the cold - so I let it idle for about 10 mins - the engine temp was fine and it still did it....
Hopefully this does not mean I need a new transmission !
I had this happen to a GM transmission, and it was the little plastic gear that drives the governor was stripped. Do some research, and I will try to do the same, and see if the C6 has the same setup. The reason it's going into second is the valve body forces it into second when you put the lever in second. If you put the lever in second while sitting still, it will start out in second and stay in second.
Exactly ... that's what happens when I would start off....it would start in second (very weird) I have done some research (and will do more as well) It took me about 1 hour to find out that the tranny is C6, some websites had it as C4....its hard to know who to trust - I like you guys here though!

Welcome to FTE
First C6 in an F Series truck = 1968
First F150 = 1975
First F150 300 I-6 with a C6 = 1977 / C4 also available.
From 1977 thru 1982, Both the C4 and C6 were available in F150's.
1983/86 F150, The C5 and C6 were available with the 300. The C5 is a modified C4.
1987/91 F150, The C6 or the AOD = Automatic Overdrive were available with the 300.
C6 transmission pan = 17 bolt holes.
Will you trust this? Above info sources: 1964/72 - 1973/79 - 1980/91 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs.

I just looked at a blown up diagram of the c6, and the governor is hooked in with the output shaft. No plastic gear that I see, and it's not accessible from the outside like the GM.
Make sure the vacuum line going to the modulator on the passenger side of the tranny is ok, and other than that, I don't know what else to tell you.
Yeah, I agree with franklin - check the vacuum hose (runs from a 'tee' on the upper firewall to the transmission). This hose likes to come loose every couple of thousand miles or so on my truck, and causes is not to shift out of first gear. I just plug it back up and it's good to go.
I just worked on the carburetor/ distributor and the same thing happened to me. I searched for stuck in 2nd and this thread popped up. I took off the air filter again and found a loose vacuum line as described. Thanks guys!
