my transmission is shifting from first to second at about 1100 rpm's, which seems a little early to me. from second to third happens at about 1800, and that seems to feel right. are these supposed to shift out of first that soon or do I need to adjust something? it also seems to go from fist to second harder than from second to third.
My '89 C6 shifts just over idle speed with very minimum throttle. Half throttle, sounds like it's shifting around 1500-2000RPM (no tach) and full throttle shifts well over 3000RPM.
that's the thing, with gas as high as it is, I don't want to have to mash it to keep from shifting so soon, how do adjust the modulator?
Most modulators for the C6 are adjustable. There is a small screw inside the nipple for the vacuum line. I believe you turn it in for higher shift points, and turn it out for lower. The modulator mainly controls the 1-2 shift.
There are different modulator valves for C6's, depending on application - the truck version has the latest (highest rpm) shift points & has the black color-code stripe.
Maybe your truck has had one of the other modulators installed at some time?
They also do fail........I recently sold an 88 F150 with a C6 & I replaced the modulator on it not long before.
It was shifting 1-2 @ 15mph, 2-3 @ 25mph under moderate acceleration (3.55 axle).
With a new modulator the shift speeds lifted 5-10 mph - much better all round.
