I think the entire job took less than a half hour. Wasn't even time enough for the beer to get cold, i had to wait.

Slight play with new hubs installed

I did this Warn Premium to replace factory POS hubs on my last SD, also an 01. But that was about 5 years ago, and a lot happens in 5 years! I don't recall having any play on the old install, but then again, I don't remember what I ate for breakfast last monday either!

I removed old hub assy. Read through instructions, and their grainy copy of a copy sheet is difficult to decipher the parts diagram breakdown. But as I recalled from a few years back, they are pretty much ready to slide in. So I did. Then I put the outer cap on with supplied screws. Then I grabbed the new hub end and was able to slide it in and out maybe 1/8" of an inch or so.

Is this normal?

I engaged to lock, and had turnage of U joints behind the brake assembly. Turned to free, and they still turned when going forward. Then I remembered the old 4wd "back up first" rule. So I turned in reverse for 1/4 rotation, then back to forward, and they were free.

BUT IS THE PLAY NORMAL?

Or do I need to re-seat the new Warn hub? I tried removing the outer lock ring and pulling out, sliding back in, then reinstalling lock ring, making sure its seated well and I still had the play.

Nevermind. Operator Error

I found out what my problem was. IF I were doing this after 5, I should have hit the beer while I evaluate. BUT, since it was before noon, all I needed was another cup of coffee.

The obvious (which I overlooked due to trying to get finished in under 10 minutes) is that there are three tabs on the back side of the outer hub. When you line it up with the "innerds" of the hub, make sure you line up the 3 tabs with the corresponding 3 slots so that the screws will draw the inner and outer parts together. Once I remembered this, piece of cake!

Any reason why I can't cap the top end and behind the axle end then throw away the vacuum line? (its full of pin holes anyways!)

Okay, so the 03 F250 i recently bought already has the warn hubs... But i (like a previous poster) want the sotf feature, would reverting back to oem hubs be as simple as removing the warns and installing the fords, then checking all the vac system? It would seem so from what ive read here.

If the vacuum lines are still in place and working, why not just lock the hubs at the beginning of winter and then use the sotf? That's what I do.

I have MANUAL SOTF on my '03 (floor lever, manual hubs) and I lock my hubs about the end of Oct. to the middle of Nov. and leave them till the snow goes away and the mud dries up in the spring. You can then shift in and out of 4X4 while moving as long as you are not spinning the wheels. After doing this since new and keeping good mileage records I have only lost about 1/4 MPG, summer to winter fuel mix has more effect. I may unlock them if going on a long trip to warmer, dryer parts of the country. I also engage 4X4 low, without locking the hubs, every 2 to 3 weeks in the summer when moving my 5th wheel into or out of a parking spot to make sure all front axle components are lubed. On my last truck the front axle steering u-joints lasted over 250K miles, never seized up, due I believe to being "exersized" and I am well on my way to that on the '03.
