My 02 f150 4.2 manual says to use mercon v in the tranny and says to use mercon in the P/S pump. It states they are not to mix. When I had my tranny fluid changed at the dealer they sold me Motorcraft tranny fluid which was rated for both (mercon & mercon v in one bottle). Can I put the mercon v in the P/S pump?
Probably meant to not mix the Mercron in the transmission.
Ford and GM has stopped issuing licensed formulations for Mercron and Dexron to aftermarket formulators and have started going to backward compatible fluids with their latest offering.
So yes it is safe to now use the Mercron V with the PS.
Word on the street is that Ford is supposedly developing a "super" Mercron that will be a all in one. This will eliminate the Mercron SP fluid also.
The PS doesnt care. Its just used as hydraulic fluid in that system. Its the transmission clutch plates that care which fluid spec is used.
Ford has used the same basic PS design for decades. Type F was stated as late as my 1994 owners manual, long after it was discontinued for transmissions. Dont worry about it.
