1993 7.3
They were already driving the Power Stroke around before the turbo ever went on an IDI engine.
The first year the Power Stroke was rated at 215 HP and was a couple thousand more expensive than the 7.3 turbo IDI which was rated at 190 HP.
How could they sell a more expensive motor that had less power than the cheaper one did.
As I remember the Power Stroke was only rated at 235 HP in the 1997 model year.
Their HP numbers did start to take jumps after the 1999 model came out with the innercooler and a bigger exhaust.
The smashed downpipe and small air intake were the reason the IDI didn't make a lot more power than the Power Stroke did.
And the early Power Strokes (94.5 thru 97) used the same smashed downpipe the IDI did.
If you take a stock IDI turbo, crank the fuel to it and leave the stock intake and exhaust on it you might be seeing 210 or 215 HP.
Black smoke is partially burnt fuel.
What it takes to burn the fuel which makes power is more air.
Lots of fuel and not enough air also raise the EGT, which can easily melt pistons even though they have thick crowns and oil jets to cool them.
