Yes, friction modifier. That is the main difference between every different ATF spec. Type F and FA have no friction modifiers, all the rest do, in various amounts. Older Fords and Toyotas are the only ones that I know of that were designed for Type F. Even GM Powerglides and Hydramatics going back to 1950 used friction modified fluids, so Dexron is backward compatible.
Put Type F in the wrong application and it will shift to "hard" or "harsh". Put Dexron/Mercon in the old Ford/Toyota transmissions and it will "slip". I found this out the hard way with a 1980 Supra.
