Dyno Nos

The dyno day was a total blast! They ran about 20 trucks between 830AM and 415PM when I left and there were still about 7 or 8 to go. They had trouble with the crank pulley sensor not staying clamped on, so given how many vehicles they had, they decided not to use it to save time. Instead we had to use the formula:

tq = HP X 5252/RPM Does this seem like the right formula?

I laid down what I thought was a paltry 274HP and somewhere between 525 and 550 tq. The curves we got showed HP vs MPH so I'm gonna plot the power curve, translating MPH to RPM to see what and where my max torque is.

I thought I was sucking because most of the Cummins and Duramaxes had higher nos than me. But out of 4 7.3s I came in 2nd. The one who beat me had twin turbos and what he said were stage 3 injectors. He laid down 466HP. Another 02 w/ a DP tuner and tons of other stuff only did 270HP and a real nice 97 did 235HP w/ a TS tuner but he had a very dirty 6637 filter.

Should I be happy w/ these nos? They are real close to what you predicted TJ!! What about that torque formula?

Pics and more nos later. I'm heading to a party.

I "did the math" and came up with 547 TQ at 55mph in 4th, which is 2310 RPM. Tire dia is 32.8in and a 4.10 axle. Peak 274 HP came in at about 2850/2900 RPM and stayed flat to the limiter. And boost got up to 22/23. 24 is about as high as I've seen it on the road. Banks says that's about the limit w/ the Power Pack chip.

Running it in 5th resulted in a best of 268 HP, but for some reason it only recorded above 70 MPH, which is past the TQ peak so I can't calculate max TQ in 5th.

As well as this old girl pulls my Bronco around now, I can't imagine how it would be with a couple hunderd ponies more.

Comments from you gurus? Cody, TJ, Cuda, et al?

i'm assuming this is wheel horsepower since you would have to remove either the engine or the trans to check flywheel hp?? that's just my guess

It's rear wheel power. I've got what is listed in my sig. Banks Power Pack but no IC. The kit included the quick turbo exhaust housing, chip, EGT & boost gauges, pillar pod, downpipe and rear exhaust pipe. Banks says the chip will add 256TQ & 120HP but as has been discussed here to no end, I'm sure that is for a CA truck. The Banks kit left the muff and kitty in. But the muff and kitty were replaced w/ an aFe 4in exhaust all the way back. The dp goes from 3 - 3.5 - 4. EGT probe is post turbo and never went over 800 during the runs. I had the hood cracked open about a foot.

The best two runs were w/ 100% braking load. The dyno is a pretty new Dyno Jet. It can do both axles (including new AWD cars). The dyno is right on. Most of the guys dynoed at another shop 6 months ago and got numbers they expected. It was calibrated the day before the party. I got some chuckles when my HP came in at "only" 274 but when that juiced up '02 could ony make 270 the laughs stopped. It's less than what I had hoped and way less than what I want! It sure sounded awesome though! Giant sucking sound under the hood! Not that much smoke either, which surprised me.

One guy had a 95 OBS w/ a Cummins! I think it did around 600HP.

I'll try to get a few pics up soon.

Well I am no dyno expert (never been on one) but it sounds about right for your mods. Too bad the TQ measurement has to be calculated but your equation is right as far as I remember. Looks Good! Get a TW chip and some injectors and the laughing will stop for good!

and don't forget the IC.

i get to try my hand at the dyno next year when the cummins guys do their central texas dyno day thing. i will hopefully have stage 1's and very hopefully a DP-Tuner 2 pos. chip. i don't think the Edge will do much with the aftermarket injectors. we will see if my hopes become reality by then. i know the stage 1's will be had, but i'm not real sure about the DP-Tuner since i don't wanna order it until i have the SD HPOP in there and i still gotta buy it. word has it that there is a possibility of a texas rally before the dyno. and we may be dynoing at the drag strip and runnin' down the strip all day!!! FUN!!!!!!
