I Just bought my FIRST ford truck ever. 05' F-250 XLT supercab 4x4 w/24,000 miles on it. As ya'll prob. know already, it didn't take me long to find out that the stock tires SUCK. I know im asking for the best of both worlds but has anyone had any luck with a tire choice. It also has 17'' rims, which I was told will be hard to find tires for. Any help?
Tires are not hard to find for 17" but 16 1/2 are. If you put on a leveling kit you can use 36" tires. I put 35" on my 2005 F350 and they are a little small but a big improvement over stock. Ford should not be allowed to sell the stock tires. My truck rides better, has more traction, and will not slide in the rain.
I'm a fan of Goodyear Silent Armor Wranglers.
I have them on my 07 and they do great in everything I've had them in (severe downpours, snow, ice, sleet, mud, sand, wet grass, etc..).
Hankook has a new tire (Dynapro ATM) that also looks like it could be a pretty good tire. I have no experience with that model (I think it's new) but I've had good luck with Hankooks on other trucks.
I put 295/70/17 Cooper Discoverer STTs on my 2005. I could have gone taller, but think it's a pretty good size for what I do. You can put a 35" tire on the truck, stock.
BFG makes an AT that has done well for a lot of folks.
I can't get over how much of a diffarence Cooper SST tires are over the stock tires. I pulled a trailer in the snow this week and I have never had so much traction. Next set will be Cooper but just bigger!
Man... the stock Contis on my 08 are **** poor (but I knew this beforehand). The Wrangler SA tires seem to be the most well rounded choice for upgrading.
We have used Good Year on our F550 trucks and they seem to always need re balancing and cup so we switched to another type of Good Year tires and the same thing happened. We went with BF Goodrich and no problems. Our Police care use Good Year tires and they are doing well. We just will never use Good Year on out trucks. My just got a new mini van and when I saw the Good Year tires all I could think of is the luck we had with Good Year tires at work. But with 701 miles on it things are good! My friend owns a tire warehouse and sells tires to the public he told me about the Cooper SST Tires and said you will love them. I took his word and they are very good tires.
I'm running Nitto Terra Grappler 325/60/18 on my truck and love them. They have a bunch of sizes for the 17" rim. These tires handle great on dry pavement and have also done great in the rain. Snow is comming shortly here so i'm sure they'll do fine in that also. These tires look 100 x's better than the stock tires and are just a little bit louder rollin down the road at first then you get used to it and don't even hear them. I will buy these again when mine wear out.
Louder after you pay for rims and tires don't you want to listen to the rubber hitting the road. I get very limited noise for the tread patter with my Cooper tires. They get rotated every 6000 or 7000 miles. Wal Mart charges me $6.00 to do all four. That is well worth the money to me.
