It's the box itself that is vulnerable. I wonder what I could do with a ten inch steel pipe cut the long way? Of course - an armored mailbox is kind of overkill!

I have a large steel pipe mailbox as do most of my nieghbours. After 5 years it`s time for another cost of paint (from fading).
It was ridiculous replacing it every 6 months, usually in every spring and fall.

I got tired of kids battering my mailbox, so I built one out of 1/4 steel and mounted it on a piece of solid 2" cold roll set in 3' of concrete. I have found 2 broken bats close by, but no damage to the box yet

Have you thought about hardened axles, like "STRANGE" Engineering?

What other axles are there?

Hardened ones, from specialty manufacturers?

At a point, G-II will need something for an explorer rear axle.

So a Sterling ten and a quarter is not going in it, I guess.

(found in '02 or so and onward, with a metric bolt pattern)

I never mess with bearings for that exact reason. For $10 per axle, the machine shop will remove and replace the bearings for me.
