ANTI-MAILBOX DESTRUCTION Thread

What have you done or seen to prevent idiots from wrecking your mailbox?

I think pictures of "HARDENED" mailboxes would be a laugh riot here...

well no pictures to show you but one of my parents nieghbors built what looked like a anchor buried the rounded bottom part so the tips where just under the ground so when the kids tried to run it over the tip came up and stuck itself into the oil pan.

Me I buried a post made out of hedge that was 9" diameter at the narrowest point and was 10ft long until only the 3ft that the mail wanted sticked out of the ground (yes buried it 7ft down) it would ahve taken a semi to even remotely break that sucker.

I've seen mailboxes on a pivot around here. If you hit it - the arm comes around and hits you BACK!

A guy just outside of town buried a 10ft railroad tie about 5ft in the ground. He cut out just enough of the tie to mount the mailbox into the hole.

I've seen all kinds of mailboxes designed to withstand the impact of a Louisville Slugger.

The best though would be the 8" cast iron box supported on a 4" pipe. That will put a serious sting in the batters hand.

Mailbox bashing has become less popular around here the last ten years or so.

I'm glad I'm not on the main road - there are bulldozers on trailers going up and down it, and the blades are responsible for some of the trashing.

ah yes almost forgot about the lousville slugger destruction, dad had a problem with that too, first thing he did was bury a heck of a post 6" iron pipe filled with concrete into a 4' hole also filled with concrete. Then goes out and buys the biggest mailbox he can find, you know hte type, one of those huge package type mailboxes, then stands it up on end places a 5" diameter piece of PVC pipe in the middle then fills the rest of the mailbox with concrete... took 4 guys to lift it up onto the post. about a month later some kids came by with a bat, batters swing, bat comes back breaks out the rear side window out of the car, and breaks the kids arm. The parents did call the cops and the deputy comes out says well ok we can charge him with setup a booby trap (turns out that really they couldn't in this case according to the county attorny since all it was was concrete properly supported) but in order to do that the kid would have to admit to being involved in committing a federal felony, and since he was a minor the parents would also be held responsible for federal charges as well as the owner of the car that was used in the commision of the crime, funny they decided maybe they didn't want to push it.

Oh but to show how stupid the kid was, he came back a couple months later driving daddies car and hits the post, which bends over but doesn't break but what does happen is the mailbox comes off the post and lands on the hood of the car, crushing it down on top of the engine and embeding itself through the sheet metal. Cops had a great laugh about that one.

Did it, some kids got hurt trying to run their 4x4 over it, took it out. It was concrete filled iron pipe (6 in dia.) set in a yard of concrete, with a quarter plate custom box on top. The kids had a tendency to run over the more frail boxes along my road and if I hadn't painted the post flat black and then painted a dainty scroll work on the post with silver paint, I probably wouldn't have got in trouble.

None the less, I'm pretty sure those particular kids no longer have the desire.

Theres one around here where they got a 55 gallon drum and filled it with cement then stuck the mailbox in the center of the open top and filled the cement around it (they had the box filled with wood at the time so the pressure wouldnt crush it in) after it was dry and the wood support removed them used a wrecker lift to mount it on a 2 foot x 2 foot brick post... I doubt it was nescesary, im sure they could have used an EMPTY drum like eevryone else, but theres always gotta be one person who HAS to be better

As for my box, i havnt done anything, because we are on a rural route the boxes are at the end of the road and there are my 3 closest neighbors boxes also there, no one can hit them cause they are where the county road ends and you have to either turn around or come up to my place, so no one is gunna mess with them

I saw one once that was completely enclosed with cement. It was a regualr mailbox on your typical wooden post, but had about 2000 lbs. of concrete around it like it was sitting in an igloo. The guy must have been in the concrete business or something. Overkill, but effective.
