ok I am in utah and it is dumping snow like crazy plus I still have an elk tag to fill so you can see my frantic need for four wheel drive!! first I have a 1988 bronco II with pushbuton four wheel drive. when I push the button it just clicks so I read on here that it could be a sticky tranfercase motor so I pulled the electric motor and greased it up but my four wheel drive is still not engaging and it sounds the same with just clicking when I push the button. so what else can I check. please help! thanks Chris
If you pull the electric motor back off you can turn the rod with a pair of channel locks to the 4x4 possition. The possitions are even marked on the back of the t-case. That way you know its in 4x4. I have an electric shift t-case in my 88 right now and that's how we shift it. If the front end still won't pull I'd check the front lock outs. Do you have manual or auto lockouts up front?
napa and other auto parts stores has a kit that manually engages the 4x4 when you pull the cable deal. its all mechanical and bolts up to the factory setup. i was looking into it for the ranger, and they are in the neighborhood of $100
Man I'd like info on that also. I have a doubler that uses the stock manual shifter. So a shifter for the rear t-case would be great. I've seen folks fab up there own shifters but didn't know of one made over the counter. Are you sure this is a t-case electric motor replacement shifter? They do make kits for the front axle disconnect 4x4 systems. That replaces the the vacume/electric disconnect/connect parts with a cable shifter.
autochefc, with the auto lock outs you'll need to crawl under it and shift it in and out of 4x4 when you leave or return to hard packed or paved surfaces.

its the disconect thingy for the front wheel drive 4x4 setup that will replace the engaging motors and actuators. sorry i wasnt more specific about it. though high end import cars have shifting setups, think its in the first transporter movie. the one with the yellow Lamborghini. the shift toggles are mounted on the steering wheel on that one.
Happyjack I pulled my electric motor and turned my transfer case to 4x4 but it will not stay in 4x4 it just slips out it will go right from 2 wheel to 4 low. dose this meen that my t-case is bad? or just needs need oil? what sould I do? thanks for all your help autochefc
We just shifted mine into 4 low and thats where it stays. The engine has problems (Lifter colapse at 2000 rpms) so it's a trailer queen now. It has manual lock outs and we leave it in 4 low and just unlock the front lock out to drive it on hard surfaces.
