Question 2004 F150 Problems.. Help appreciated

A friend at work has a 2004 F150. Last week it started to idle erratically ( 1500 rpms to 500 rpms ) Now it is idling low and dying on him. The emission light came on too and he disconnected the battery and it cleared it, but it still idles low and wants to die. Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds like an 02 sensor to me.

what motor size does he have? pull the codes,if you dont have a scanner,if you dont have one the bigger parts stores will do it for free. if you can then repost the code faults ,it would be a great help to diagnose the problem. it sounds like a vacuum leak without knowing anything more ,check the pvc hose a see if its cracked.

My guess off the top of my head would be the IAC (Idle Air Control) My 00 Expy with a 5.4 went goofy and did the same thing I think it was 70 dollars. Easy to replace just a pain to get at. Just a guess though

Where is the IAC valve located on an 04 f150?

An EGR valve can do the same thing you describe also, if it's clogged...Pull the intake hose attached to it and see if the idle picks back up. In all honesty, a scanner would help you out, and not a generic one...

Throttle Position Sensor was faulty on early trucks (mine included)....had it replaced and they updated/flashed the computer with the latest and greatest version and it's run fine every since.

mine did the same thing, ended up being the fuel pump drivers module located on the crossmember under the spare tire. Mine rusted through and shorted it out and took out my fuel pump.

That is exactly what happened to mine last week in NY. The truck is 500 miles away and I had to take a 13 hour bus ride home on July 4th. Ford mounted that fuel pump drivers module in the worst possible place. Mine was so rusted through that it had a hole right through it and it shorted out and also took out the fuel pump. It is supposed to be fixed tomorrow and then I will drive back out to pick it up. There was no fuel pressure at all and this was found to be the problem. It shorted out so badly that you could smell the burnt plastic inside the module.
