I have a 99 f350 7.3 that just died on me. it was missing and making some knocking noise before it quit, but it still would accelerate. But at idle it would shake and you could here knocking. It cranks but wont fire up could it be my fuel pump? or something else i haven't really checked it yet i will today. how can i check to see if the fuel pump went out? i know it had and bad injector, and i had been running like that for about 2 weeks trying to save to buy the injectors little by little i already replaced 3 number 1, 2, 4, r new injectors. could i have messed up the motor by running it with 1 or possibly 2 bad injectors? i will check the fuel filter and check all my fuses today, if anyone has an suggestions i would appriceate it thanks all.
Lots of things it could be. From what you are saying your truck is doing, I would check the wireing under the valve cover. Seems like that connection gets loose and things start going wrong. Don't sound like the CPS but you never know.
Turn the key on and see if you can hear the fuel pump running on the frame rail right under the drivers door. Change the fuel filter if it has not been changed in a while.
Strong possibility of very low fuel pressure.
Before you start throwing more injectors at it, make sure that the fuel pump is generating at least 50 psi at full throttle on a big hill.
it has a new cps i replace about 3 months ago and the fuel filter was changed about a month ago. i will check my valve cover and fuel pump see what i can find.
checked the fuel pump it is working. Gonna check the valve cover gasket, also my air filter guage was almost complely clogged so i opened and removed the air filter but it still didn't start.
ok this is what i found, i checked the wiring on the valve cover and it was connected. then i was gonna replace the fuel filter and when i was gonna take the black cover off it was loose. I opened the cover and removed the fuel filter and there was no diesel in the bowl. i then turned the key on to see if the fuel bowl would fill up but it didn't, the fuel pump turns on i checked it but no fuel is going to the fuel bowl. i then filled the fuel bowl with diesel and sealed it up and it still would not turn on. Maybe there is air in the system since the cap was loose or the fuel pump is working but not putting out enough to turn it on or the line is clogged up? any other ideas would be helpful thanks guys
well cause your pump is making nois , that dont indicate its working. best way to chace would be :
1) make sure you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel.
2) disconnect fuel pump outout line and pou hose on it turn the key on and check if it shoots fuel or just dripps.
3) get a bucket with diesel and disconnect pump intake line and turn it on see if you fuel press goes up by wathing it going to another bucket. if its still just so so. pump impeller is shot
4) after all ealse checks fine , drop the tank , you pickup might be clogged.
another thing to check would be fuel shut off switch on passenger side kick panel. take the panel off and inspect the wires on it too, few people had them melted and cause the problems with pump not working properly.
the fuel thank is clean i did it last week, i will check tommorrow if i have any pressure by disconnecting the fuel line to the canister. how do you disconnect the fuel lines?
