If you re-gear with those huge tires I would imagine you'll be getting at least 10-12, if you're engine is healthy.
Are you planning on doing the gear swap yourself? Be aware that the front diff is a high pinion/reverse rotation differential, so you'll need to buy a new carrier for that one. I would also suggest buying rebuild kits for both diffs (new bears, seals, shims, etc).
I would get the tires and try it out first, I run 38's and 3.55s on mine and its a 302/auto and my motor is wornout almost 200k. It's a little slow on the get up but it's not awful. I run Super Swamper tsl/sx on both my truck and bronco and they are the next best thing to a Bogger in IMO. I'm not saying gears won't help just that you might not require them. If I got into my motor and freshened it up it wouldn't be bad at all in my opinion. plus you got a 5spd so you can wind it up tighter before you switch gears to keep it in its power band.
I think i have decided to do 35's then upgrade later on. If i do the 38s i will have to wait to get a lift for them to fit under the front, and i will definately need some kind of gearing. How does 35 12.5 /15;s look with a 6 inch lift? and 3 inches of body lift? Will it be as good going through mud and stuff as 38s
Yeah that should look pretty good. To be honest the lift will be a bit overkill. You should be able to 35s just fine with that 6 inch suspension. And the 3 inches body won't do any help for offroad (the frame and everything stays the same height to the ground.
With 9 inches of lift up to the wheel wells, those tires are going to look pretty small... Might wanna remove the body lift and just go with suspension, thats what I'd do...
Also make sure you've got the correct wheels with proper backspacing for those wide tires

the truck 302 and 351s (except lightning) come with E7 heads, which are crap.
my bud has a 96 F-150 with 35 BFG ATs or 36" Swampers and its a pig. albiet its an auto, it still is like a slug, especially on the 4 lane. id say go for the lower gear ratio since the 302 likes to wind up a little higher. if it was a 300 or 351 id say go a little higher since they have the low end torque advantage and dont like to wind up as high.
yeah it has the old beat up 35 125 thorbirds under it as she sits. They rub the radius arm when turned hard over but that should fix when its lifted. as far as removing the body lift i think i will see how she looks when the susp lift goes in. I need it for the time being to fit the tires underneath i am gonna buy tires first so i can drive this beast! And then save for the lift.
Looking for recomendations for tires though? 35 12.5 15 inch rim. I am trying to stay as economical as possibly but still have a good tire. I figure if i can find something good for 200.00 or under i will be alright!
Well i got my 6 inch supsension lft heading my way, and i ordered some 35 12.5 bfg mud terrains! I am gonan remove the 3 inch bod lift and try to stay a little more conservative buty still have fun with this thing.
