i have an '89 ford f-150 with with a 5 speed manual behind a 300 six.
the problem is the gear inside the tranny that runs the speedo gear seems to be stripped and therefore stripped every speedo gear ive put in and with the speedo not working the VSS isent working becuse it runs off the speedo gear also.
so is this a problem?
Your cruise won't work and obviously your speedometer won't either. As far as how it runs, you should be fine. I ran my 79 F-150 with 88 electronics without one for awhile and it ran just fine. It did throw a code once.
I'm almost positive that the sensor on the rearend is what your talking about, It only controlls the abs on the 89. I don't think it controlled the speedometer until like 92-93. so if you dont mind the abs light being on you should be mint.

The older ones use a sensor mounted on the trans/t-case tailhousing in order to get readings for the speedometer, while using the sensor on the rear diff strictly as a RABS sensor. They later combined the functions into 1 and eliminate the VSS on the trans/t-case tailhousing.
