What would the clutch life be on a 5 sp manual attached to a 300? I currently have 104k on it and have never had a problem. Only recently if one shifts a bit quickly, it grinds going into 3rd. It this indicative of early clutch problems?
I have the same set-up that you do. I got about 150,000 miles out of original clutch. but it also had a rough life(pulling cattle trailer through the hills of tennesse) tend to ride it more than usal. Right now I am on my second clutch. I have about 200,000 miles on truck. My transmission does the exact thing that yours does in third gear and it has been doing it for years. Havent had any problems yet.
P.S. about three months before my clutch went out it started making a whinning sound when I would pres it in.
FierceFoMoCo , What yr is your truck ? Usually , The clutch disc , pressure plate & pilot last a long time as long as they arent abused . The weak link on the later models is the internal slave valve . Mine just died with no warning with about 110K miles . If you are looking to replace or when you do replace the clutch components , Go with the 11 In clutch disc , Its a little more money but much more durable if you tow or haul heavy loads .
Given the mileage on your truck Id can almost guarantee the slave valve will be the first thing to die . It requires pulling the transmission to replace so while youre in their you may as well replace all the other clutch parts . The replacement slave valve comes with the release bearing attached so you dont have to purchase it seperately
Recently I changed my original clutch because the throwout bearing was getting way too noisey. '81 F100 300L6 4-sp 200K miles. New Borg-Warner parts, but the new pressure plate is much less stiff than the original. I suppose in another 20yrs I'll have to change it again.....
New Borg-Warner parts? hmmm, so it appears that there are aftermarket parts for the clutch assembly. Would going that route be better than original equipment?
My '87 with 115,000 is starting to chatter when I take off in 2nd (T-18). Called Western Auto....Disc, pressure plate and throwout....$120. or so for 11". And thats' NEW, not reman.
2 Dealers in area wanted over $400.00 for 10"......You KNOW where I'm going!!!
