Thats what I found too, when I searched the forum. Just hoping I was wrong.
It is impossile to get a donor-truck here in Norway with manual trans/diesel and a reasonable price. Maybe I should import one from the USA...??::
New ZF 5 trannies usually go for 1500-2500 USD. But there are the odd ones used on Ebay for less. I don't think you really need to import a whole donor just to get the manual tranny, its not like north america is just down the street($hipping). You can probably have a shop modify your driveshaft, and and the clutch components can be ordered seperately, as there are many online auto wreckers.
Yes, still working onboard a ferry.
For now I am just playing with the thoughts about doing a swap. My auto works just fine. But I am mostly driving at small roads at low speed. I think the auto works fine when I am at the highway, but I am not happy with it when it is often in 1-2-3, without lock-up. As soon as the speed is high enough for lock-up to engage, it is ok.
Shipping-costs are about 3000 $. So then I think I would import a driveable truck in the price-range 1500-3000 $. ( I am not sure my wife thinks this is so very smart..!..) then I have a spare engine to overhaul and paint.
Plus a lot of other parts.
If a person understands that most anything can be possible, many are not feasible or economical. Why not if you are going to import a running truck then make it another IDI.
If lockup is your only beef with the E4OD transmission, you can install a manual override switch kit, or if you really want to go all out, you can completely replace the stock computer with an programable aftermarket one (which is what I run).
