The ideal location for the thermocouple is as close to the exhaust port as you can get it.
The pistons are the weakest link when it comes to heat, so the closer to the piston the thermocouple is the better the reading.
When you order the headers, get them to weld a probe fitting right at the inlet to #6 cylinder, on the top of the header pipe- gives you lots of room for the probe and wiring. #8 is OK but not quite as easy to access- more under the brake booster, wiring etc. I PM you re the headers.
on a 6.9 diesel wouldnt you want a probe and 2 gauges? one in each cylinder close to the rear of the engine as possable? one in each bank... non turbo oanyhow
I wouldn't say they make a big advantage, but they do help get the heat out of the engine quicker- I ran mine into 3" pipes to a y then 4" out the back. Sounds great, the engine is definately more responsive without the restricted original exhaust. I have a pyro, and was able to increase fuel about 1-1/2 flats- I am happy with the power pulling a 7000 lb trailer.
Well they showed up in the mail today. I am verry pleased with the craftsmanship and over all quality of them. I don't know if they were worth $554.$$ though. Yes thats right $554.00 after shipping 160 miles. When I ordered them I just assumed the listed internet price of $450. and some change. But Oh no they had a price increase they said and there web master has been beating around the bush to update the web site. so beware if you want some they are now $527.00 + the ride to your house.
I am planing on going to the local dyno shop to get some base pulls for the fun of it.
specs of my truck
All OEM 1994 none turbo 7.3l diesel with a E4od trans. 180+k New rings.rod bearings, head gaskets and 500psi static compression.
Where are you located, I am about 200 miles north and accross the boarder- I like my headers-
Make sure to do the dyno run first, so you can compare the increase. I did a dyno run after headers but before turning up the fuel- wasn't all that great, but didn't have before numbers to compare. I need to go do another run. Hint, truck ran way better after I worked the soot all out of it by pulling 7000 lbs 2400 km through the mountains. ie run the hell out of it before you do the dyno.
Dont feel too bad about the price, when mine got shipped to Canada I got dinged for GST (6%) and UPS screws us over for brokerage fee's etc- added up to another 125- after I paid the 60 UPS delivery charge
