Strange situation

Over the past few years my dash lights have been going out from left to right and I was down to just being able to see the oil and battery gauges at night.

Last night while listening to a game on the radio I punched the bottom of the steering wheel pretty hard (bad call by ref ) and one light came back on! After years of being off. It was the left most light, now I can see the fuel and temp gauge too.

What is going on here?

I figured they had burnt out and I have not been interested in tackling that job...

Sounds like a loose connection or a short with the wiring under the dash.

Been there - done that - got the straight jacket. Corrosion between the bulb base and the socket.

I got the same problem with the left side going dark...Maybe I will give the whack a try. Sure looks like a pita getting in there to fix it right.

Could even be the filament in the bulb itself actually touched and somehow stuck but another jar could knock it loose again.

same thing in my 95 Ranger. I replaced nearly every dash light thre was. Thought at first maybe headlight switch or dash light dimmer but when I took apart my dash to check it nearly all bulbs were blown. Since this is my service truck I have to see at night. Mark

yeah, pull that dash, replace bulbs and hit all the contact surfaces of the bulb holders with electric contact cleaner. Good as new!
