I got my first tank of gas yesterday for my new '01 Excursion. The manual said 87 octane only. It said higher octane could cause a problem with the engine. Okay, never heard that before, but..okay.
I have noticed that driving lightly, in overdrive, up a light grade, causes quite a bit of detonation. The manual said that a little detonation is normal. Only if it is all the time should you take it in for service.
If I hit the gas, it goes away.
What are y'alls experience? You got detonation? Is everything ok?
If you just got this truck, oculd it have come from a higher elevation and the computer hasnt relearned its fuel trims yet? When i bought my camaro from a high elevation in colorado and was driving back to chicgao i got on it once when we got to a lower elevation and it pinged liek mad but i drove it a while and it was fine after that.
My 05 has had that since new. It seems that some fuel brands do it more than others. My dealer tech who is very good (and I trust) seemed to think it was normal. Going to a slightly higher octane made no difference.
Welcome jesterdog - glad to see you come over...
Tust me on the fuel filter - if it's not the problem, then it probably needs to be replaced anyhow. If that doesn't fix it, then look at MAF and EGR.
Mine just recently started a little detonation and I plan on replacing the fuel filter. I know the dealership replaced it just before I bought the X (a little over a year ago and about 26k miles) so it's due.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the fuel filter. Does it use those quick disconnects that require the plastic clips that slip over the hose, then you push them into the fitting and pull out on the filter?

This article shows the process for F150s, but it's basically the same {CLIK HERE}. It shows some little, grey plastic, compresson removal tool - what I've been eye balling is a metal one that looks like this...
Pardon my smartalec response, but don't you mean PREdetonation, ie "pinging"? If you had a truck without "detonation" you'd have a non running vehicle.
All kidding aside, I had a gas Suburban that would predetonate only on Shell gasoline. Occasionally I'd forget and fill up with Shell and the pinging would be back until I'd burned through the tank of fuel and filled up with a different brand.
I don't think it's as much of a problem with today's lean-burn engines, but it used to be that carbon buildup in the combustion chamber would cause pinging.
I'm not sure about your engine, but I also had a truck on which the knock sensor had gone bad and I had to replace it.
I was getting pinging more and more frequently, only in OD at low rpms...couple years back i started adding a few gallons premium and it helped...i have slowly increased the amount of premium per tank...work well now that pumps stop at 100. currently i add about 10 gallons of premium giving me an octane of 88.5. Cheaper than running full midgrade. i add a little more for towing, also increased mpg slightly.
1. detonation is the correct term. Detonation is an uncontrolled burn. A proper burn is not called detonation.
2. as long as its unleaded high octane fuel wont hurt anyhing, but you will lose some power if you go higher and higher as it burns slower and slower and will actually still be burning as the exaust valve opens in some cases.
