Jeep cam position sensor

I'm working on a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 / 6. The Check engine light came on and three codes came up, one was a Cam Position Sensor Circuit Fault, so I ordered up a new cam position sensor. I just need to know where the thing is at... Thanks in advance

Cam or crank position sensor?

The crank position sensor is fitted to a notch in the bellhousing just behind the engine

edited - in case you read the original.

According to the Haynes manual:
Camshaft position sensor (2000 six-cylinder models) [my book only goes up thru 2000]

The camshaft position sensor is located on top of the oil pump drive assembly and is triggered by a pulse ring. It is possible to replace the canshaft position sensor without removing the oil pump drive assembly. If the oil pump drive assembly must be removed, the mounting flange must be precisely marke in relation to the engine block or it will be necessary to reset the camshaft position sensor with a scan tool.

Then follows 10 more steps with pictures for R/R. I don't think I'd try this one without the book.

Basically the cam position sensor and oil pump stand are just in front of the oil filter - according to the picture.

Also it says - before removing the cps, position the engine with number one cylinder at TDC and install an appropriate sized alignment pin through the hole in the base of the pulse ring.

Matt, give me a call if you need more info. 406 261 6665 - Tim

Also known as the wireless distributor- They basically took the hall effect unit from the distributor and used it as the cam position sensor. Having said that, the plug could be loose, the sensor itself could have some corrosion or contamination, etc.

I forgot to mention that is was a 2002... I appreciate the info Tim and Jared... I looked at a picture of the thing and it looks pretty easy to replace. It replaces the distributor on this year motor, so I just need to find out where the distributor was on the old motors. The Jeep still runs, so I don't know what the deal is, I just don't need the thing to leave me stranded. My truck blew the rear main seal out on a friend that was borrowing it and I have to fix that too...

Right hand side, just forward of the oil filter.
