i'm looking at buying a truck that i think is a pretty good deal, however, i'm not familiar with these trucks. i've always liked the looks of the early 80s trucks and came upon one that a friend is looking to sell. it's a 1980 F150 rcab long bed 2wd with auto and a 351M with 80,xxx verified miles. His asking price is $700 title in hand. it is tagged and running down the road so i figured this was a pretty good deal. runs and drives excellent, pretty fair body with no rust of paint missing but there is easily repairable dents in the bedsides. just looking for opinions on whether this is a good buy and what kind of gremlins i can expect from these trucks. i would be doing a major tune-up as i do on all my older vehicle buys.
Sounds like a One Time Good Deal to me, I'd go for it. I'd probably change all the rubber hoses if they are original. Maybe have radiator cleaned/flushed. Change auto trans. fluid and filter. Water pump and Radiator fan clutch may be getting close to end of life if still original units. Check brake components, wheel bearings, all lamps and differential fluid. If A/C is inoperative repair and convert to R134A refrigerant, as a minimum replace the accumulator and orifice tube.
I'd buy it. I also agree with Piffery1 about doing a quick overhaul of basic maintenance items. Don't want something so small and easy to fix now to cause big problems later.
That isn't a good deal, it's a killer deal.
I paid $1500 for my 1980 F150 many years ago, and they guy I bought it from has offered me my money back numerous times over the years...........
okay i bought the truck today, and i paid a whopping $500 for it (seeing cash fills the sellers eyes with wonderment and they forget the original agreed-upon price). Will be swapping the axles and suspension from a 2000 F350 that i obtained for a whopping price of $Free (long story). I will be doing a major tuneup on her soon and adding an intake, cam, and exhaust header back system for starters to get her running real strong and then i'll do the swap with all my downtime around christmas. I'll be posting pics!
