Question Can I Tow It???

Hi eveyone, I stumbled across this forum and my eyes are blurring from hitting the search button so many times. Here is my problem. I sold my 'o5 6.0 diesel because I need to scale down on expenses(baby on the way) and I was thinking about buying a V10 Excursion.

I had the diesel truck for one year and only put less than 10k miles on it. Of that 10k, maybe 4k miles were actually towing. Besides that, I drove the truck to and from work 16 miles round trip. I have a toyhauler that I tow, which fully loaded is around 10k. I never really thought about a V10 until I stated looking for another vehicle to tow my toybox. The diesel was pure ego and now i can't afford another one. I would like to get an excursion because you can pick them up so cheap.

My question to all is this....Will a stock 2001 V10 Excursion w/ 70k miles pull this trailer? I do some mild climbs and I don't want to be in a situation where all my friends are sitting next me wondering if the engine is going to explode! I know it will not be flying up hills, but I don't want to be going 35mph and scared the engine will overheat. I don't care about the gas mileage because i have other vehicles. So what's it going to be.... Deal or no Deal?

All V10 4x4 Excursions WITH 4.30's will tow (by rating) 11K. Some early ones say less (like your 01) but nothing changed but the sticker. 3.73 trucks, which are much more common, are rated about 400lbs less. Check the specification tab up top.

The V10 engine is reliable and you'll not have any problems with that weight provided the truck is in a good state of tune.

You'll undoubtedly needs airbags or add-a-leafs or other rear suspension enhancements. A rear sway bar is a must. Later models have them stock, early ones (01) don't. Dial up Summit or JC Whitney for a Hellwig.

Power mods should be put on hold until you get 4.30's in it (unless it already has them).

Welcome to FTE!

Sorry...I omitted some info as I was changing the wording of those sentences. Basically, 01 Excursions with 4.30's and the V10 are rated at 10K, 3.73 trucks are rated at 9600lbs or 400lbs less. 03+ are rated at 11K with a 400lbs drop for 3.73's & the V10.

ken, how did the ratings change even though the truck stayed the same (except for gearing and changing the 7.3 for the 6.0)

Matt,

I'd highly suspect 'marketing'...'marketing'...

Receiver ratings went up at the same time...when you see a bunch of Ex's side by side...you would be hard pressed to see any differences in receivers other than the rating 'tag'...

A 2001 Ex either V10/4.30 or 7.3 PSD/3.73 is rated at 'max' tow of 10K#
A 2002 Ex either V10/4.30 or 7.3 PSD/3.73 is rated at 'max' tow of 11K#

What changed?...marketeers...that's what would be my guess...the bow-tie girls prolly up'd their ratings so Ford had to as well...

joe.

If they upped the towing capacity just like that, it makes me wonder what the ex can really tow?

Have him send you a picture of the door jamb label. Then match that two digit code up to the list.

31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion

33 — 4.30 non-limited slip, F-250
C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion

Well...there is always the little metal tag on the axle...should be bolted to one of the rear diff cover bolts maybe 1/4" wide by 1" long?...with that code...one can tell too...he/she would have to look from behind at the rear differential cover for the tag...mine is on the drivers side middle lower bolt area...

joe.
