Went on Autozone's store locator site today and pulled up a list of stores. Started calling closest first, one had two ZD9's, second had none, third had 17. Needless to say I took a 12 mile trip. Check around, they can still be found for $2.99. Good luck!
I have been reading about nightmares dealing with glo plugs and controllers. I have an 87 6.9 that I am changing th clo plugs on. So far there are only two left that I cant get out. The others were reasonably easy to get out. Unfortunatly I ordered some champion plugs before I started reading around. The plugs that I am removing are AC. Needless to say the tips are swollen. So, a couple of questions...Should I just trash the champion plugs and find oem ones? And this one---When the glo plug controller cycles, the wait to start light stays on for about 15 seconds and then the solenoid on the controller starts clicking. I have counted up to 32 clicks when cold. Is this a normal operation? I would like to bypass the controller with a button and dashlight. Is this possible? I need some help. Thanks
sounds like you did like I did when I first bought my ol' pickup. I bought a set of Motorcraft ZD1A from Autozone for $2.99 each. I think your 87 takes the ZD9 (pin instead of spade connector). Depending on what you paid for your champions I would see about returning them. $25 for a set of Motorcraft/beru is hard to beat. They only had eight in stock.. but there was a store 10 miles away with 16 more in stock and 8 at another store 16 miles away..etc. give them the part# you need rather than looking up by application.
I know there are some posts detailing how to install a manual glow plug button.. try a search in this part of the forum. When I bought mine it already had a manual button installed, so I wouldn't be able to guide you very well with that. To start I hit the button and count to 10-12 (probably about 8 secs) and she fires right up.. but the coldest night I have started was 20F.
Thanks misnomer---Unfortunatly I bought from ebay for 28.00 plus 4.00 shipping. If I knew that they wouldnt swell I would use them, but I dont want to deal with broken tips. Been lucky so far. I'll check into finding some others but I may be tempted to use them anyway just to see if they will work. Any comments on the Champions???
was fine in summer but now that it is colder have a lot of trouble starting it...i dont like using the ether but have to so it will start...
someone told me the glow plugs were gone, so i went to this forum and read up on it....
Questions i have:
1. if i use the Motorcraft 11.5v glow plugs i understand i may have to install a manual setup. is there a kit or something that will make this simple?
2. i noticed that there is concern about holding switch down too long and burn out the plug....how do i set up an auto timer to shut off plugs?
Or better yet where might i acquire one? Is there such a thing already available?
3. i have not been able to determine if the OEM system is intact as it has been modified from what i have looked at...when i engage the ignition no light comes on for the glow plug or engine light...
4. i am seeking a manual for this truck so i may read the electrical schematics and see what i need to do
5. i saw in one post that there was mentioned a solenoid with a purple wire off it..glow plug?? there is one in there and also a second solenoid with a red wire....starter??
6. the truck runs strong once started
7. Autozone does not carry the motorcraft zd1a plugs any longer
8. i do want to use the 11.5 plugs so is there any need for modifications to accomodate them?
any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated....
