I'll argue that this does more to increase crime than prevent it.
Who tuns in guns at these events. It sure isn't the bad guys, unless it's some of the older models from the gangs arsenal, and I'm pretty sure with the money they get ($150) for turning in an old iver-johnson breaktop .32 they can "upgrade" to something a bit more lethal.
But even if the gun is turned in, the bad guy remains on the street.
The guns are turned in and no questions are asked. If one of the turned in guns is found to have been used in the commision of a crime, the gun may not be used as evidence in that crime.Sounds like a pretty good way to get ri of a dirty gun, doesn't it.
Fools are born every day. Be a cold day in Hades before I give anyone my guns. I felt like writing about the same response to their article, which I see nobody else has responded to.
Damn, I missed it! I too have a couple of worthless old pieces, and I need to pick up a boat near SF...could've paid for the gas to go haul it back with.
In the 1990's, the French Gov't tossed over 300,000 Remington Rolling Block rifles into the Atlantic Ocean, much to the disgust of collectors world wide.
Boston gave out $200 Target (get it?) gift cards last summer for handguns. Limit one per person but it was anonymous and they had about 10 different turn-in locations.
If one wanted to you could turn in several unregistered junk handguns from the collection, sell the gift cards for 50 cents on the dollar and go out and buy a nice handgun.....
Hey, what a great idea! The government is helping criminals fence stolen guns. Now you can go out, rob a house, and sell the stolen guns to the government and they can't use the evidence against you. Just shows you how stupid governments are.

Wish I had thought of that....
Target, huh? lol
You can bet that the bulk of what is turned in is just that-junk.
With the possible exception of elderly widows turning in guns that their husbands owned.
Useless, feel-good politics at work .
