New starter. New problems.
But the war was won with fast small tanks with diesel engines, independent suspention and 5st trannies.... (T34)....
you have some of the finest metallurgical scientists in the world there in the Ukraine
#45 steel has been used for U joints for years
welding to the flywheel is going to create spots of brittleness that will crack
cryogenic cooling of flywheel and heating of ring with press on is the best but requires more machining
a think called prop suckin
39 liter engines have lots of start up friction
i doubt if a 400 lb gorilla could hand prop an ME
most of these had hand crank wind up spring/flywheel inertia starters or an explosive charge starter that fed into the cylinders.

For last 25 years Ukraine exports more then 80% of steel to USA and EU. More then a half of export goes to the USA.
Why would you use a crank handle when you have that huge lever called a prop?

It is dangerouse. From other side how you can start engine in air at low speed when it is impossible to use air flow to turn propeller.

You can see mi friend working with lathe....
When my aero was taken apart, I replaced bearings in tranny.

Exploded view!!
Then I added new overfill bottle.

I had to drive my friend backup car....

Now all is OK! I'm glad, she is on road againe....
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
doesn't look like bendix was fully engaging fw teeth on old ring?
no CNC machine with milling head? that lathe is older than I am. uncle has a 1944 lathe with babbit bearings he poured himself and machined out. he set it on concrete foundation and built his shop around it. 12 ft long and weights 8,000 lbs
is your loaner car a Volga? looks like an accident between a '55 Ford and a '53 Plymouth
that's went they built cars with chrome steel bumpers that weighed more than the driver
please make us a .wav recording of the new starter sound?

This car is the first gen. Volga, restyled first time. It is made in 50-s. Previous volga had deer on hood, but this deer was considered dangerouse and dissapeared after 2 years on conveyer. This wolga has 2 sofas, easy to put tobed, later models had 2 front seats like in newer cars. Stock 3st tranny is swaped to 5st tranny like in my aero. But my friend wants to put DOHC engine under the hood.
Lathe is made in 1956. It is called 1K62. Babbit bearings were used before 1941, but german Krupp lathes had ball bearings. There are ball bearings inside 1K62. Later 16K20 appeared in 60-s, in 70-s digitall controll unit (DCU) was available as option. Early models were used p/cards and big disckettes (5 1/4"). Now DCU is connected to PC with USB. Yes, we have 16K20 too, but w/o DCU. Especially for you I gonna make a snapshot of CNC mashine with milling head and big microwave for teeth forgering.
Stock t-ring was 10mm, my new t-ring is 17mm. So bendix is fully engaged now. Looking at many worn t-rings on junk-yards I see that bendix really does not fully engages on many cars, not only ford cars and trucks.
