Question 4x4 trouble

hello everyone, I have a 1998 explorer EB, and the 4x4 high and low lights flash 6 times every 2 min. when I first start driving and make a turn you can feel 4x4 is engaged after driving 1-2 min disengages and lights flash. however I can still engage 4x4 low during this (here shift motor and clunks when making turn), also 4x4 high I believe works when lights are flashing tried making a turn and clunks. I have already replaced the GEM, and cleaned the HALE sensors(is there any way of checking them?) Thanks in advance, Matt

Go through the last couple pages of threads, there's a few posts where others (including myself) have had a similar issue and what everyone had to do to resolve.

I've owned a Gen 1 and now have a Gen 3 Explorer. The '98s are Gen 2 so I don't know for sure if they have 4X4 modules which would be the likely culpret if you had a Gen3. I think I read that they do have modules that are located near the jack, in a hatch in the rear cargo area? I've also seen a lot of info on rebuilding the x-fer case shift motors on Gen 2s. Sorry I can't be more help but I think you can find lots of info by searching on those two items. Good luck.

I have the 2004 Sport Trac XLT. Bought it brand new in 2004. This past weekend we had a terrible snow storm here in the Seattle area. I used the 4X4 low again (one a year around this time when we have snow). Now I have a problem - I cannot get it out of 4X4 low. I tried various things - switch the ignition off with it in auto-position, in high position. Doing it driving at very low spead or standing still - no difference. It's stuck and I cannot get it out of 4X4 low. The vehicle is now true 4X4, but I can hardly drive it. ....PLEASE help. My last option will probably be to take it to the dealer, but would prefer to save the money rather if it is something simple.

Thanks for the great forum and everyone's contributions. I enjoy it.

I know your 04 has a different system than my 94, but I have to put the tranny in neutral with foot on the brake to switch out of 4x4 low. You may also want to check your owners manual.
