I have a 98 F-150 4.6L w/ the smaller transmission (70W) and my overdrive button has stopped working, it was intermttent at first, then it just quit working altogether, has anyone else had this problem. Oh by the way I changed the actual button itself and that diden't help.
I had the same problem with my 99 f150 4.6. The dealer had to put in a whole new o/d control. Apparently it was the wires down inside the steering column. I guess it's easier for them to just replace the whole unit than take the steering column apart. Cost me about $125.00 cnd.
One of the wires leading up to the O/D button, through the shift lever is broken. It's common on all Ford vehicles with a shift lever mounted on the steering column.
You need to replace part of the wires with some having a heavier guage and also insulate the wires at the base of the shift lever where this usually occurs.
-Disconnect the negative battery cable.
-Remove the O/D switch and unplug the 3 leads.
-Pull back on or cut the leather boot at the base of the shift lever to expose the pin holding the shift lever to the steering column.
-Pull out the pin with a pliers and remove the shift lever. You'll see 3 wires inside. At least one has been probably worn through completely and is grounding out or may even have broke.
-Solder in the heavy guage wire to each lead and insulate them all with a heavy plastic tube, or at the very least electrical tape.
