I am restoring an '81 F150 4x4. Plan is 4" lift with 33's, ZF 5 speed and engine? Currently has a 300 I6, and I'm wondering if it would be wiser to swap in a 351W or would the 300 perform just as well if it were dressed in the proper items? I was thinking Clfford 4bbl. intake, header, camshaft, shaved head and a K&N. The 300 was rebuilt not too long ago (to factory specs) and I'd like to keep it if it'll come close to what a 351 would do for me.

Keep the 6er and just add all of the little goodies you can to hype it up. This engine will do just fine and produce enough power for you. However if you want horsepower than I would suggest you drop in a 351. The 6er is a torque monster and doesn't care for horsies to much. If you are going to install all of the mods you say you want to, than the 6er will scream loud enough to wake the dead. I say go the 300 and build it around the idea you have in your head.
With the added power should I install an aftermarket harmonic balancer to help keep that long crankshaft under control, or will the stock unit work fine?

The stock harmonic balancer will work just fine. I would replaced it just for safety if your truck has over 100,000 miles on it. Good luck!!!!
Ive done the up build to the 300 with all of the clifford goodies and it does help. BUT if you are lookin for big block power forget it. You get tons of low end but the upper end just hurts due to the long stroke....just make sure you gear your rearend to what you want...if a 4x4...would go 4.09's. that would help with the off the line lots. It was one of the most fun things i have done and it did help the power band. just dont expect 12 sec 1/4 miles! haha....
I am in the process of swapping in a 393 right now and can saw enthusiastically.................................. ................ stay six cylinder. There is a lot more to swap than it appears.

KEEP IT ON THE LEFT FOOT!
