front axle

I have a front axle out of a 1978 ford f-150 supercab 4x4, I was wondering if it would fit in any late 70's ford trucks, because it has leaf springs and a frame I'm looking at has coild springs. Thank you for your help.

the supercab 4x4s were the only 150s to use leaf springs and not coils you could probably order a set of coil buckets and grind off the spring perch and weld on the buckets.

Not sure about the super cab f150's frame if it is similar to the std cab or not. I guess my point is the typical F-150 spring buckets bolt though the frame sharing some of the bolts with the engine towers. I would bolt instead of Welding if I could.

Just my thoughts.

The supercab F150 shares the same frame as the F250/F350, so those are a direct swap. The Coil sprung F100/F150 will need to have coil buckets welded onto the axle.

M-72, That's cool. I think I got myself confused. When 390FE said coil buckets I assumed the upper Coil bracket that mounts to the frame.

Any rate, after Re-reading it I have more to add

There's more than just welding on coil buckets to the axle. On the F-150 the Coil buckets bolt to the top of the radius arms that wrap around a diamond shape in the knuckle forging with C-Bushings.

So to use a leaf spring axle on a frame with a coil setup, I Think it would be difficult because there needs to be a place to connect Radius arms to axle and the frame, Along with the tracking bar.

It would be easier to use a leaf spring axle on a frame already set up for leaf springs(250) or a 150 frame converted to leaf spring by mounting shakles mount on the frame.

JohnDeere, To Answer you question "will the leaf spring axle fit any 70's Truck?" - No. It will fit F-250's and F-350 But only the F-150 Supercabs. Not the F-150 Coil sprung frames. Unless your into modifications - then anything can fit.

I wasn't even thinking about the radius arms, as the axle tubes have the diamond bosses that the radius arm clamps to, I don't know on the leaf sprung axles if they were cast in and not used or not cast in at all.

Anything can always fit. When guys want to install a D60 in the front od a 1/2 tone truck or bronco, and wish to use the stoc radius arm set-up, they simply have to weld in some "wedges". This will provide the radius arm a place to bolt up to.
Follow this link and you will find both the arms and the wedges.
Only $85.00 for this. Easy as pie.

The F150 Super Cab 2WD does not share the same frame as an F250 2WD Super Cab, and the F350 is different again.

The section modules (depth of C channel frame rails) is different.

F150 2WD Super Cab

1974/75 = 4.95"

1976/77 = 6.87"

1978/79 = 4.43

F250 2WD Super Cab

1974/76 = 5.95"

1977/79 = 5.53"

F350 2WD Super Cab

1974/76 = 7.09"

1977/78 = 6.78"

1979 = 5.95"

The only F150 Super Cab (and only in 4WD) that has the same frame as an F250 4WD S/C is in: 1977/78.

1977/78 F150 4WD S/C & 1977/78 F250 4WD S/C = 6.78"
