hey all, I have a 95 F-250 4x4. as it would not pass inspection and I did not have money to fix I bought a new car to save gas. I started truck every 2 weeks for 1/2 hour to charge system. I use this truck to plow my drive and no one elses. Little use. Before that it was a daily driver for work. The battery is only 8 months old. I started it tonite as we expect snow monday. my batt lite was on and voltmeter was reading 11.96 vdc. called parts store and said may be something else. I smacked alt with hammer, no luck. belt is tight. So, by tomorrow I need to have it in running condition. was the parts guy wrong? am I headed in the wrong direction? I did continue to run the truck, and it restarted , but , it always will after running a spell. thanks all for any replys. Bob
when they tested the old alternator they said it was fluctuating, and beause the bearing was bad believed it was hitting the brushes(?). So they recomended the new one. I checked the conections and followed the wires best I could. What are the odds of still being able to do a quick plow without it shutting down. I have a hydralic plow with no electric to it and I would not be using any lites. After running it the battery will come up to 12.5 volts when motor off. thanks Bob
A fully charged battery will last quite a while in running vehicle with no accessories on. This is a guess, but I'd say nearly an hour. What are the odds that the new(rebuilt) alt is defective?
Take your meter, and with the truck off, check the voltage on the large output wire coming out of the alternator(usually black/orange). You should have battery voltage there. If you don't, then follow this wire up to the starter relay, and look for a burnt out fusible link.
Thanks for the info guys. I did manage to plow monday when I got home. Its been mighty cold here in Maine and since its dark when I get home I have not been able to look at it any more. I will look at it Sunday and report what I find. The way things have been going I am glad to be working 6-10s. Thanks again all, Bob
