Another oil leak question.......

To save me hours of searching, I was hoping someone might be able to provide me with a list of common problem areas for leaks that deposit oil into the valley. Beginning with the "most common" first.

I have another leak, can't really tell where its coming from yet, but its NOT leaking down onto the ground YET. Wet under the fuel filter and puddled under the turbo.

I know this type of question has been asked 1000 times or more on this forum, and a common suggestion is to clean the area with degreaser and run engine and look for leaks. BUT, I feel like a list of problem areas and knowing the areas that leak more often than others will help me to look in the right places AFTER cleaning.

Thanks in advance,
ra

First question; is it oil or fuel? There is a long list for each and this will save some typing.

Plowhand,

I am glad you asked that question as I posted oil leak. Last week I was installing my new Stancor GP relay and saw the puddle down there, in the dim light it looked like oil.

BUT, before I answered your question I went and stuck my finger down there to make sure.

My final answer is: it is FUEL.

There is a puddle under the filter housing and under the turbo. Not sure how much is leaking or where its going, but there is not anything leaking onto the driveway, YET.

I don't think it matters but the engine has 119K miles on it. About 6 months before I bought it, at 91K miles, the previous owner had the fuel filter canister replaced at the dealer because it has some tiny holes in the bottom from rust. Perhaps I can eliminate that one.

Thanks
ra

O.K. fuel it is. Front and middle of the engine valley(under fuel filter) (remember it will drain to the back, sloped engine) Fuel filter housing (not likely with a new one), Water drain valve, filter restriction sensor, FPR, fuel hoses, high pressure fuel return lines from each head to the FPR (usually not) fittings on high pressure lines at head(this would leak at the very front of the valley) and at FPR.

Rear of valley. As stated above fuel pump, bango fitting, high pressure (steel) fuel line fittings going into head. I think thats everything, but someone will correct me if I missed something.

this is probably a stupid question but

where exactly is the weep home on the fuel pump, it seems to me that the fuel pump is kinda hard to see just for observation........

Its pretty dry on the front of the engine, but puddled under the fuel filter and under the turbo.

After checking the weep hole, if its not leaking I guess I'll remove the fuel filter canister and replace all of the fuel hoses and clamps..........how does that sound......

It is at the bottom of the pump on a small flat section that runs top to bottom, maybe 3/16" wide. If I remember right it is on the passenger side. The flat section takes a turn at the bottom, towards the center, and that is where the small hole (1/16") is. You probably need a mirror.

Bottom arrow is the weep hole. Top arrow is the crimp on the pump body. Usually have to use an inspection mirror to see the weep hole while the pump is on the truck.

Above are right, the weep hole is shown by the bottom arrow.

When I posted the pic, my idea was to show 2 areas where fuel was leaking on my pump.
If you look closely you could see how diesel washed out clean a certain area on the pump, kinda like leaving a foot step in the snow.

I bought mine from Ford. So I guess International has them too. Maybe NAPA, but never tried there. They have the pumps so they ought to have the hoses.
