Knock knock...........

............ no this isn`t a who`s there joke. Been a while since I`ve posted. Lots going on with my 2002 V10. What started out early this summer was a light knock. It was so faint I didn`t really think I heard it. About a week later I hear it again, off goes the radio and I heard it again. I`m thinking this is a rod knock but only at low rpm`s??? Oil pressure good, hmmmmm?? Took it in for a scan, checks out good. Checked it to see where the noise is coming from?? 2 places and nobody can figure it out. By mid summer the knock is getting worse and more consistant but only after the engine is warm. Now I figure run it till it breaks then I`ll know what the heck the noise is. By Fall I have a very noticable miss coming from the exhaust(started to sound like a V8), scan still shows no codes. Knocks like 5 Deisels sitting side by side and people are starting to give my truck dirty looks(especially those chevy guys), but again only at low rpms. Still baffled I take it to a transmission shop thinking maybe the torque converter is going bad?? Transmission guy is stumped after the test drive. He calls his motor guy over to have a listen. Motor guy is stumped, ok, 1 more test. While giving it a little brake torque in the parking lot it breaks!!! Excellent I say, finally!!!! Trans comes out. Cracked flywheel (50%) around the crank bolts. Converter shaft bad from not sitting in the pump. Pump is shot now. So, trans guy rebuild everything. Test drive, still got a knock. Replace converter again "just in case" the new one was bad, still knocks. Motor guy takes a better look at it over at his garage. Starts pulling c.o.p.`s. Ahhhhhh something is going on in the #10 cyl. Pull the oil pan and the main bearing(closest to the trans) and there it is, busted in 3 pieces is my bearing. The bearing was split right in half (radially) and the other half was in 2 pieces. Was still missing a portion of bearing yet and found a bunch of ground up pieces in the oil pickup screen.
I still love the truck. It has never run right since the day I got it (bought it used with 60,000 on it). Stomp on the gas and could never get it to shift at 5200, more like 4700. Cleaned the MAF, IAS, new plugs, sereral new fuel filters. Fuel mileage was horrible as was as towing mileage and pulling power. Made a big improvement when I put headers, removed the cat and put a flowmaster 70series on it. Highway mileage went from 10-11 to 14-15. I did put a new cat on it, without the cat the flowmaster was kinda loud.

So now I sit and wait until Jasper sends a remanufactered motor to the shop. I hope when this is all done that it runs like the V10 is suppose to run. Then I`ll be happy........

that sounds like what happened to my 2002 f-250. i bought my truck with 63,000 miles and after a few months it started a mild knock and months later it got louder but everyone thought it was exhaust leak or a valve knock. i never did anything assuming it was still running normal. months later what i beleive to be either cylinder 5 or 10 blasted a connecting rod through the block. fun part is i still drove it a few more miles trying to make it home. it sounded like an apache helicoptor was shooting me. you did the smart thing by checking it out. i have a brand spankin new motor and i can see, hear, and feel a difference in performance and gas mileage.

think it has to do with 2002?
