CCV Question

How important is it that the crankcase has a vacuum created by the intake to pull the gases and stuff out of the crankcase? So will switching to the CCV Mod and in turn not having a vacuum to pull the extra stuff out of the crankcase cause extra buildup or condensation in the crankcase? I am sure the answer is simple and I just missed it in my search. Thanks in advance.

A vacuum is not necessary. The International trucks with the T444E engines (basically the same as our trucks) dump the CCV straight down to open atmosphere. No vacuum there.

What you don't want to do is create pressure in the line (such as routing it into the exhaust), or to block it off so that it doesn't flow. Any time one of those things happen, you'll get oil leaks like crazy.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I thought I had read something along those lines before I did my CCV mod. I have been burning coolant so I took my truck to the dealership to get a diagnostic on my coolant problem. They told me that without a vacuum on the CCV that it has probably caused my motor to build condensation and has also clogged my PCV system. They wanted to charge me $1500 to pull the motor tear it apart and find out how bad the problem was inside the motor. I quickly decided that it was in my best interest to take the truck somewhere else and have the injector sleeve replaced.

No doubt, there are a lot of part changers in the shops out there. Granted parts changing is how they make there money. Use the guys here they can tell you whats up without even looking at your truck.

How much coolant you burning?

after doing my ccv mod i started to smells like diff fluid but its the gasses coming out of the hose and u can smell them around the truck pretty strong. but i think i started to notice it more due to the fact that i switchd to synthetic. is this normal? my hose is run to my gas tank.

Using synthetic oils makes the CCV smell funny. That's perfectly normal.

Is your hose run back to the fuel tank, or did you plumb it into the fuel tank?

I burned around 1/2 gallon in ten to fifteen miles. Is this typical of cracked injector sleeves?

I am currently having the heads pulled and the injector sleeves checked along with a pressure test of the heads. What else should they be looking for and checking while they are in there? It is too bad I didn't have plans for bigger mods in the future or I would have bought some new injectors and had them installed now.

from my description above does it sound like it is the injector sleeves? Or does it sound like something else?

Are you just burning off coolant, or is there also oil mixed in with the coolant in the reservoir?

There is not any noticeable oil in the coolant, nor is there any coolant in the oil pan. The heads have been pulled and all the pistons and cylinders look carboned over or as the mechanic says, they look typical of a normally functioning motor. I will get some pics of the inside of the little black box that is flipped during the CCV mod. It is very gunked up as well as the inside of the valve covers, they both have a 1/4" thick layer of creamy colored gunk on them. I was definitely losing coolant through the exhaust, are there any other possibilities of what this might be? Please Help!!!

I just went and looked at the motor. None of the cylinders have any irregular scratches, or discoloration, in fact they all looked perfect. The tops of the pistons had some slight carbon coloring on them, they didin't look bad by at all. The heads were pressure tested, and did not have any leaks, except one head had an allen plug that was leaking. The heads were warped 2 thousandths, the mechanic says this is definitely within operating range. The only questionable thing is the CCV, inside the small black box is a thick buildup of nasty looking gunk. I would always have what seemed like an acceptable amount of smoke coming out of the vent, which dumped at the rear of the truck by the spare tire. The oil was drained from the truck and did not have any coolant in the oil. Sorry for the length, just trying to throw out all the info I have. Please Help with any suggestions on why I am burning coolant. i will try to get some pics posted up of what i found. Thanks
