I want to swap a 302 into my Wrangler. I was wondering what engine you guys would recommend. I would like to stay with fuel injection. What year had the best power?
I have a 351w in my jeep. I did a full drivetrain swap using mostly ford parts. I had a very strong running stroker 6 before. New power is way over that of the stroker even with 39.5 swampers.
i heard something about swapping in almost the entire drive train including axles from a 302 explorer....i have a 95 wrangler that i wanna do it to, but my truck takes all of my money as is.
Yeah I know what you mean. I am trying to build/restore my 83 F150 while working on my Jeep. I just got sick of downsifting when I drive into the wind. I need V8! haha
That reminds me of vacation last June. We swapped vehicles with my neice and were going to drive up to Colorado towing my custom built aluminum utility trailer behind her 03 Wrangler. After 50 miles on flat Louisiana I-49, it guzzled 1/4 tank (19 gallon tank) of fuel, wind noise in the soft top and doors wasn't going to cut it for a 3,000 mile trip. We turned back, swapped the trailer back onto the 06 Mustang GT and took off again. By the time wee made Dallas, I'd made up the lost two hours. The Stang averaged 23 mpg @ 80-100 mph. WITH the 800 lb trailer. I suspect the Jeep would have done better with more motor, more than the 4.0 6 banger. It had no reserve power with the trailer.
The most common swaps are the 5.0 explorer and the 5.0 mustang. The mustang has less header issues but a longer front belt set up than the mustang. If you can find a cheap enough 5.0 explorer you can also upgrade to the 8.8 rear end pretty easily. There's plenty of info on both over at http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/
Don't count on good mileage though!
