Intermittent starts

So it didn't start this morning, I have had it to a machanic 3 times, He says it's a security glitch. I know it's not the following, Ignition, fuel pump, me.

My situation:
Have it running great, no problems, then on an intermittent basis it won't start it just turns over and over and over (i have given up after a couple of seconds so I won't waste the battery trying) In the past I would just cycle the key and it would start or I would do that twice and it would start. But now it isn't starting at all. To be honest I don't really know WHAT the machanic did to get it to start again. He claimed he could cause it to happen. When it does run it runs like brand new.

So my questions
Has this happend to anyone else? Could it be a security thing? Even though I said i couldn't be an ignition thing could it? ANY THOUGHTS? Thanks!

The PATS system will not let it crank over, so a bad key is out of the question.
Does it have remote start? Could be a problem there.

Thank you for the reply. No it does not have a remote start. Just your basic stock 01 F-150 No real modifications other then rims and tires.

I will be calling the machanic shortly to see what he has done, word for word. Then report back.

Can you get it to start if you step on the gas slightly? If it starts, it's the IAC.

Thanks Joe.

I did do a search on the forum and found this not to fix my problem. I have tried that, and heck for good messure, try it again this afternoon, but in the past when I tried it the once it did not fix the problem. So my thought is it isn't an IAC.
So I talked to the mechanic that has had my truck 3 times and he pretty much said he "perged" the computer (because of the security hits in the last couple of months) and then kept if for a few more days to see if it would happen again and then gave it back to me stating it "might" be fixed (Hasn't charged me anything either). He cleaned the battery posts for me also.

Like I said it turns over no problem (until I kill the battery because I try too much to start it). Also when I had it for the two days before today it started great, no problems

Do you adjust the tilt wheel on your truck very often? Try tilting it down to see if that helps. If it does, then you may ahve wiring in the steering column that is broken, making intermittent connection. Good luck!

KingRanchMan: I did try the tilt a couple of times. It did not help.

I am believing 02Crew more and more everyday. I lost one of my keys so I started using the spare (about 9 months ago) So I am starting to think that this may be the problem. The key is just not programed to my truck correctly. Is there a way to bypass this (legally) without having to take it to the dealer. Or just enough so I can get it to the dealer!

At work there was a early f-150 with PATS and had 2 different kind of keys, one PATS key and one normal key. When you put the normal style key in, it would turn over all you want but it wouldnt start. So maybe a normal key doesnt let the ignition or fuel work.

there are two ways to program key key. one way is put first good key in turn it to run for 4 sec.than do the same with the 2nd good key. than put the key that needs to be programed in and turn to run for 4 sec. you will want to have all keys ready to go cause you have to do this kind of quick.. the secound way im not sure about but i think it involves a computer or a modual or something, your problem sounds differant but it couldnt hurt to try a new key but you only have 1 key so yould need to bring it in to a shop to do

Thanks all again. Ya 02crew I only have one key and so I don't think that would work for me.

I have been trying to read up on some things that I googled. One looks like it is the information about the programer 02crew is talking about:
http://www.bsecorp.com/files/techtips/FORD%20PATS.pdf

The other just has a little hope for me:
1996 and later

Interrupts fuel delivery and injector drive on all, also starter interrupt on some
http://facultyfiles.deanza.edu/gems/.../PATSnotes.doc
I say there is hope becuase it does say it interrupts fuel and injector and starter on some. That is what seems to be my issue, the fuel and/or injector interruption. So Bobby may have a point.

My option that I am going to try now is call my local Ford dealer and say I have my title with my VIN and proof of ownership and see if they can make a set of new keys for me. Then if that doesn't work get it to the shop again and see what may be the problem.

Well being that I think it is something wrong with my ONLY key I have, I don't think I have an option, do I? If the self reprograming requires one good key and one unprogrammed key, I am screwed, no pun intended.

But I suppose if I get one key, then I can do the self reprogramming on my own, couldn't I.

But he!! knowing my luck this isn't the cure for what ailes my truck, I seem to be the type that if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all, especially when it comes for vehicles.

edit:
Looking on this website http://www.sievekingprodco.com/helpspg1504.html, it looks as if I have a Type 3 PATS II ngsPATS system if that helps anyone.

The Theft light does not blink rapidly when turning over and the check engine light does not stay on either. So this is even more frustraiting because it makes me think that it isn't a PATS problem grrrrr..... HELP!

Me again... I just talked to my Ford Dealer and he thinks it's an intermittent Fuel pump problem. He suggested to try the rubber mallet to the fuel tank again to get it going then get the fuel pump changed in it and try that out.

He thought since the theft light doesn't flash it isn't a key problem.
Thoughts...
